"When it comes to life, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude." G. K. Chesterton

The Holy Eucharist

The Holy Eucharist is one of the seven sacraments and it is a source of amazing grace. It is truly a communion with Jesus, the opportunity to feel His love, and to partake of the ultimate food for our souls.

In that we are of the Ukrainian Catholic rite and children of every age may receive Holy Communion, it is up to you, as a parent, to begin to foster a reverent desire for this spiritual nourishment. Then, when your child reaches the age of reason, the Church Family plays a role in formally preparing them for First Confession. As a result, they learn what it takes to capitalize on receiving the Holy Eucharist in a state of grace - free from sin and more worthy to be one with Jesus. Hopefully, it becomes a habit for them to receive both the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist, in that order, on a regular basis.

As a family enrichment activity, make time to talk to your child about Holy Communion so that it becomes a deliberate and anticipated choice to approach the altar and receive. If you do not, it is quite possible that (1) they have no idea what they are doing and why, (2) it becomes a mindless motion and (3) they have missed an opportunity to pray, as Jesus enters their heart and into their soul. Share your personal stories and why you have been inspired to bring them to church and to Sunday school. This is the age when they are most innocent and open to the seeds of faith that will grow strong as they develop into who God intends them to be. There is no better friend than Jesus to help in this regard.
